Roku Won't Connect to Wi-Fi? Fixes and Every Error Code

Roku's official guide walks four checks and a full error-code table (14.xx, 018, 009 and friends). We reproduce the sequence and map each code to Roku's recommended action.

Key takeaways

  1. Restart paths are exact on Roku: Home screen > Settings > System > Power > System Restart; or unplug 10 seconds.
  2. Error code families: 14.40/14.41 = wrong password; 14.20/14.62/14.64/016/017 = weak signal; 012/013 = Ethernet; 018 = slow internet; 009 and 14.xx = can't reach internet; 003 = can't update.
  3. A red X after entering Wi-Fi info means the connection failed — restart the player/TV plus the modem and router.
  4. 'Not connected to the Internet' inside an app means the app lost the connection; streaming needs a strong network.
  5. One device called a gateway may exist in your home — restart that single box instead of separate router + modem.

Step 1 — The four checks

What it means: Roku's own opening sequence.

  1. Check you're on the correct network with the correct password.
  2. Connect a phone, tablet, or laptop to the same network; if it fails, it's the ISP.
  3. Restart the Roku: Home > Settings > System > Power > System Restart — or unplug the device, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in.
  4. Restart the router and modem (or gateway): unplug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in and let them fully restart.

What it means: each code maps to one fix.

  1. Wrong password: codes 14.40, 14.41, 14, 014 — recheck the Wi-Fi password and try again.
  2. Weak Wi-Fi signal: 14.20, 14.62, 14.64, 016, 017 — move the Roku closer to the router; restart router and Roku.
  3. Ethernet cable: 012, 013 — unplug the cable 10 seconds, replug; try another cable or switch to Wi-Fi.
  4. Slow internet: 018 — move the player closer to the router; restart modem and router.
  5. Can't connect to internet: 009, 14, 14.10, 14.11, 14.30, 14.50, 14.62, 14.64 — use the checks in step 1 to fix general connectivity.
  6. Can't update: 003 — move closer to the router, restart both; if it persists, contact your ISP.

Step 3 — Common messages decoded

What it means: three strings Roku specifically documents.

  1. 'Unable to connect to wireless network' during setup — follow the on-screen suggestions and retry.
  2. 'Checking wireless connection' ending in a red X — the result was unsuccessful; restart the player or TV and the modem/router.
  3. 'Not connected to the Internet' in an app — the app lost the connection; fix connectivity per step 1.
